Silverthorne Colorado Homes For Sale

Silverthorne, Colorado is a town surrounded on two sides by forest and wilderness. Nestled in the Colorado Mountains, approximately 70 miles west of Denver, Silverthorne is situated at an elevation of 8,730 feet along the Lower Blue River Valley. Its prime location as the first exit west of the Eisenhower Tunnel along Route I-70, at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 6, has earned it the moniker of “the gateway to western Colorado.” Denver’s International airport is about 100 miles away (about a two-hour drive).

The largest municipality in Summit County, the estimated population of Silverthorne is 4,000. According to real estate data for the week ending July 21, the average listing price for Silverthorne homes for sale was $559,251. Silverthorne CO real estate figures indicate that this represents an increase of 0.2% or $920 when compared to the week before.

Incorporated in 1967, Silverthorne cannot boast of a long and colorful history associated with the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1859 like so many other cities in the state. The town site, however, does owe much to a Summit County character known as Judge Marshel Silverthorn who traveled to the area in 1859 to regain his health. He remained long enough to build the Silverthorn Hotel and to provide many lasting services to the area.

Involved in mining and driven by the dream of striking it rich, in 1881 he purchased along with some friends, 160 acres from the United States government that is the site of present day Silverthorne. Unfortunately, not much gold was uncovered and the property was turned over to his daughters after his death in 1888. Later in the 1930s an “e” was added to the end of the name, becoming Silverthorne.

One of Summit County’s busiest ski area gateway towns, Silverthorne, Colorado offers all kinds of lodging, everything from condos to cabins at much more reasonable rates than those found at the base of the mountain. Renting skis is much cheaper as well and besides skiing, the surrounding Ptarmigan and Eagles Nest Wilderness areas are perfect venues for all types of outdoor sports.

The 62,000 square-foot Silverthorne Recreation Center and the Silverthorne Factory Stores with more than 70 brand name outlets have much to offer the town’s residents and visitors. Along the Blue River, a new Riverwalk area offers a myriad of retail shops, picnic facilities and a performing arts center for concerts and different local events. Silverthorne is also home to The Raven, a new golf course community. In summer months the Blue River is a Gold Medal trout stream that draws anglers from all over who seek the four different types of trout that inhabit the waters. Both fly and lure fishing are practiced along the riverbanks.

Silverthorne CO is a full-service, well-balanced community that offers a wonderful quality of life to its residents. It is all possible due to a unique alpine environment and many outdoor activities designed to please both mind and spirit.
